START WITH THE RIGHT STICK

Choose a stick that will be strong enough, and light enough, and easy enough to work. Some species of wood can be quite strong even if the wood is slender, while others may need a little more thickness but may be easier to work and get quite light when the wood dries out. If a stick is needed immediately, it comes down to a matter of using what is available.

Avoid evergreens if possible. They usually have a lot of pitch and will be, well, sticky.

Choose a straight stick long enough to be a help. The rougher the terrain, the longer the stick that is needed. For hiking very gentle hills or flat ground, hip height will work. For fording streams/rivers, very steep hills, big rocks and logs, and so on, a shoulder-height stick or even longer is required. In really extreme situations, two sticks will make even scary situations quite negotiable.
